On November 5, 2024, the Innovation and Digital Transformation (IDT) Research Group at VNU International School hosted a hybrid academic seminar on "Authorship Forensics". The keynote speaker was Professor Maiga Chang from Athabasca University, Canada, who also serves as an advisor to the IDT Research Group. As Associate Dean of Research & Innovation and Distinguished Professor at Athabasca University, Professor Chang is a leading expert in educational technology, serving as Editor-in-Chief of prestigious journals including Educational Technology & Society (Q1, IF 4.595) and has published over 260 research papers.
In his presentation, Professor Chang introduced a novel approach combining Statistical Natural Language Processing (SNLP) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to distinguish between human and AI-generated content. This innovative method achieves over 96% accuracy with remarkably short training times - under one minute for the two-class model (human/ChatGPT) and seven minutes for the three-class model (human/ChatGPT 3.5/ChatGPT 4). The approach uniquely focuses on analyzing grammatical structures in 200-250 word abstracts, proving more consistent across different disciplines compared to content-based methods.
During the engaging Q&A session, Professor Chang shared his progressive views on AI integration in academia. Rather than restrictions, he advocated for embracing AI as a collaborative tool while emphasizing the importance of redesigning assessment methods to focus on in-class interactions and demonstrations of understanding. Professor Chang also highlighted his commitment to developing free, open-source research tools, prioritizing community benefit over commercialization.
The seminar, which marks the beginning of IDT Research Group's academic series, concluded with Dr. Pham-Duc Tho presenting a Certificate of Appreciation to Professor Chang. This successful event promises to open new avenues for international research collaboration in the future.
